Disclaimer: What you read here are my recollections and opinions of events that I experienced with Allstate - and should not be considered statements of fact.
Feeling certain that there is a mistake in the premium, I decided to find out how much Allstate would charge for property insurance to a customer with the same profile as my mother - an almost 75-year-old female, with our house in our postal code area.
Allstate Canada provides online quotes. To save you time and effort, the following are the questions that Allstate asks to provide an insurance quote.
The following is what I found.
Page 1: It is interesting to note that for a generic quote, Allstate does not ask for your legal name. Only sex (male or female) and your age are of relevance.
I find it odd that though Allstate speaks much about diversity and inclusivity, there is no option for the modern "other".
Page 2: For your property, the quote app does not ask for your exact address, only for the postal code, in which there are on average 20 houses. It appears that the exact house is not relevant - how odd.
Page 3: I can understand the relevance of the person having a policy cancelled or refused, and the number of claims the person has had, but I am confused about the relevance of how long the house has been insured. How does past insurance determine risk in the future?
Page 4: The last page asks for consent but providing a credit score is optional. At no point does Allstate inform the customer how important the credit score is in the quote calculation.
On December 6, 2024, I conducted a test by requesting two quotes. All responses were the same - except for age and sex. In this test, the comparison is done without giving consent to a credit check.
The first quote: for a 57-year-old male, who has had car insurance with Allstate in the last 12 months.
For my estimate, it should be noted that I had previously received a quote of $107 per month, or $1,284 per year, when consenting to a credit check. For not providing a credit check, Allstate increases the estimate by 43%.
The second quote: for an almost 75 year old female, who has not had car insurance with Allstate in the last 12 months.
It seems that there is less risk involved with a 75-year-old female than with a 57-year-old male.
The quote for a generic 75-year-old female is shocking because the quote is is $1,335 dollars lower that the premium of $2,859 that a 75-year-old woman with 30 years of insurance with Allstate has received. My mother is paying 114% more than this estimate.
My discovery, for some reason, my mother, an almost 75-year-old female, is deemed by Allstate to be a high-risk - specifically 2.1 times riskier than a generic female of her age. I wanted to know: What is it about my responsible more, a woman of impeccable character, that Allstate find risky.
Confident that there is some mistake, my next step was to contact Allstate and enquire in person.
